Some of the same principles
which apply to a regular business site also apply to an
ecommerce site. The site should be designed to match the mood
you want to create for your target audience. It should be
appropriate for your intended demographics.
Unlike corporate identity sites, an ecommerce site's home page
often features products or product categories. There are also
sometimes product shortcuts to "this weeks specials" or other
specially featured items.
There may also be special offers or seasonal items which are
prominently displayed on the home page. Below are some other
items which are common to ecommerce web design.
Easy to navigate - not too deep - A
mistake people often make is to "over-organize" products into
subcategories. This makes it difficult to navigate.
Easy to search - The site search engine
should be adjusted to easily produce some search results, and
may have a simple search and an advanced search version. |

Crisp product photos
- All images used should clearly depict the
product/service. Ensure that you optimize your images for
rapid download.
Product descriptions & data - product
descriptions should be enticing and benefits oriented. In
addition there can be product details which contain
specifications. Shipping weight should always be indicated.
Added convenience features - in stock,
related items, etc. Site shoppers like to know if the item is
in stock and if so, the estimated time of delivery.
Shipping options - People are concerned that
they will get the item in time, or at the cost they have in
mind. Shipping options should include overnight delivery and
an inexpensive delivery choice.
Integrate with your back office accounting software
- Crude ecommerce sites require that data be
manually re-entered into QuickBooks or other accounting
software. Your costs will be the lowest if your ecommerce site
connects to and shares data directly with your accounting
package. |
