Before Technology
There was a time, before electricity that all commerce
was carried out face-to-face or via the mails. Now running
at the speed of light, using electronic commerce, oh
how the times have changed for business.
Phone
Commerce
Phones are still a way of life for business, and at
one point most business to business transactions were
made over the phone. Now e-mail and other electronic
methods are coming of age.
Fax Commerce
The facsimile device is now indispensable, but there
was a time, not so long ago, that it was at the heart
of many business transactions.
Internet
commerce
With some sites, The Internet had its roots during the
1960's as a project of the United States government's
Department of Defense, to create a non-centralized network
designed to survive partial outages (ie. nuclear war)
and still function when parts of the network were down
or destroyed. Summary 1992 "The WWW world consists
of documents, and links. Indexes are special documents
which, rather than being read, may be searched. The
result of such a search is another ("virtual")
document containing links to the documents found. A
simple protocol (" HTTP ") is used to allow
a browser program to request a keyword search by a remote
information server."
During the dotcom
era, people talked about how the net would empower shoppers.
People who struggled with badly designed sites probably
found this idea hard to swallow. But this is one dotcom
idea that still holds good. Consumers are now more in
control. The entrepreneurs have blown up and gone away.
As for the mainstream players, this market has fallen
at their feet but they're still just dabbling with it.
It really now seems to be driven by consumers.
